Southern Provisions – October 9th
For those with inquiring minds and hungry palates, here is a once in a lifetime chance to sit down with Natalie Dupree, the Grande Dame of Southern Food, and Dr David Shields, aka “the rice man” to talk about food, southern cooking and heirloom plants.
Natalie is a contemporary of Julia Child, Jacques Pepin , Anne Wilan and others that set about making food a focal point in American dining. Natalie was the hero of Southern food during that movement, and just received a James Beard lifetime achievement award to celebrate her life’s work. Her latest books “mastering the art of Southern Cooking” and Southern Vegetables have won critical acclaim
Dr. David Shield, nicknamed the Rice man, has been an intregal link in the work (along with Glen Roberts and Sean Brock ) to reclaim and restore over 12 varieties of heirloom plants once thought lost forever, back from extinction. His work with Carolina Gold rice has been monumental. His recently book “Southern Provisions” is a remarkable tome to the legacy of the food we all hold so dear!
